Prishtina, 16 December 2009 - Organized by Saferworld and FIQ in coordination with the Department for Public Security of the Kosovo Ministry of Internal Affairs, around 40 participants from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), Kosovo Police, District Prosecutor’s Office, a senior UNDP consultant of the Parliamentary Commission for Internal and Security Affairs, EULEX Police, ICO, UNDP, OSBE, ICITAP, Hunters’ Federation, Hunters’ Association “Kaprolli” from Prishtina, NGOs: KMDLNJ, Kosovo Centre for Gender Studies, Kosovo Institute for Media and Policy (KIMP), POL, ATRC, American University in Kosovo (AUK), Ferizaj Students’ Council, and representatives from the community of village Gërmovë, discussed on challenges in implementing of the law on weapons, which was approved by the Assembly several weeks ago. |

Adoption of the law on weapons-a positive step |

Gjilan, 10 December 2009 - At the debate on the topic “Law on weapons, its implementation and shootings during celebrations”, organized by FIQ and Saferworld, in cooperation with KCIC organization, there were discussions on opportunities and challenges of implementation of the law on weapons, adopted a few months ago. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), the Police, Prosecutor’s Office, Court, student and youth organizations, other NGOs and media, expressed their opinions on the issue of illegal possession of weapons in the country. The representative from Saferworld organization presented some of the findings from the research on small and light weapons, whereas Kadrush Koliqi, head inspector at the Department for Public Security within MIA made a presentation on legal infrastructure for weapon control. |

Preparing the community on security issues and concerns |

Pejë, Prizren, 4, 9 December – with the aim of sharing experiences, identifying safety issues and inclusion of the community in improving safety conditions, Saferworld dhe FIQ, in cooperation with Syri i Vizionit and PHRC organized roundtables with representatives from tens of villages and areas of Pejë dhe Prizrenit, in two separate meetings. During 2008/2009, FIQ and Saferworld in cooperation with Syri Vizionit and PHRC worked with the Councils of village of Raushiq/Pejë and Lubinje/Prizren in improving safety conditions in the community, with roundtables being a continuance of support for these villages. |

Support to the Council of Ferizaj Students (CFS) in drafting the annual plan to include and strength |
|
 Ferizaj, 8 December 2009 – with the aim to continue supporting the Council of Ferizaj Students (CFS), among others, in treating the safety problems at school community, Saferworld and FIQ held a workshop with 30 students, representatives from 6 high schools. During this workshop, all together drafted the annual action plan of CFS, including main segments where CFS should enhance its inclusion and strengthen its role at the school community, and other stakeholders for cooperation were identified. |

Supporting national action on small arms and light weapons control, Kosovo |
|
September 2009 - In September, Saferworld was invited by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MoIA) to attend a workshop to finalise the National Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Control and Collection Strategy and Action Plan (2009-2012). The week long workshop took place in Durres, Albania and was sponsored by the MoIA and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). It was attended by around 30 representatives of several Kosovo Ministries, Kosovo Police and Customs, Courts, Prosecution, OSCE, UN Development Programme and the EU Rule of Law Mission (EULEX). Saferworld was the only Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) member of the working group to draft the strategy and the only NGO to attend the workshop. This is a testimony to Saferworld’s expertise on SALW and long-term engagement with communities, civil society, the Kosovo Police, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Kosovo Assembly on SALW control. |
