Tracker Survey on security in Kosovo
Prishtinë, 12 August '08 – As a part of the project "SafePlace", under the draft phase is the latest survey which is part of a series of surveys of FIQ and Saferworld in the security field. This will be the third part of this survey, which will compare previous reports as well as bringing in new information from the new survey.

The aim of this survey is to analyze the four most important fields that affect the safety in the country. These four fields include: policing, small arms and light weapons (SALW), justice, and community safety.

The launch of this report is expected to be during September.

The SafePlace Project – Phase III
The third phase of the SafePlace project has been launched as a joint partnership between the Forum for Civic Initiatives (FIQ) and Saferworld. This phase builds on the successes of the first two phases of this project and will concentrate on assisting the new state of Kosovo to develop its capacity for small-arms and light-weapons control, community security and a strong and accountable security and justice sector.

Supporting the Security Committee of the Kosovo Assembly
The SafePlace team is working with the Security Committee of the Kosovo Assembly to facilitate their work and promote a conflict-sensitive and community-based approach. FIQ both presents to the full Committee and accompanies Committee members on field visits. In this manner the Committee is connected to a wide range of non-governmental actors and is made aware of community concerns.

Supporting Small Arms Control in Kosovo
There are several actors and events shaping small arms and light weapons (SALW) control strategy in Kosovo at the present time. In this area, the SafePlace project is continuing to conduct its ongoing series of Disarmament Surveys of pubic attitudes, and using these as a basis for  making recommendations for developing effective future SALW strategy. Complementing this work, the SafePlace team will also publish the security and disarmament survey to further highlight the real and perceived security situation in Kosovo. FIQ and Saferworld will also continue to explore how SALW issues and community safety initiatives can best be linked through practical work at a local level.

Developing Approaches to Community Safety
In an attempt to improve approaches to community safety, the SafePlace team will be conducting research on the successes and difficulties encountered by the various community structures working on community safety issues in Kosovo. A mapping of the locations of these structures throughout the municipalities of Kosovo has shown that there is still a need to help communities address their security needs. The findings of this research are used to guide the approach of the SafePlace team in their expansion of the Safer Community Plan model into new locations in 2008.
