Supporting national action on small arms and light weapons control, Kosovo
September 2009 - In September, Saferworld was invited by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MoIA) to attend a workshop to finalise the National Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Control and Collection Strategy and Action Plan (2009-2012). The week long workshop took place in Durres, Albania and was sponsored by the MoIA and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). It was attended by around 30 representatives of several Kosovo Ministries, Kosovo Police and Customs, Courts, Prosecution, OSCE, UN Development Programme and the EU Rule of Law Mission (EULEX). Saferworld was the only Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) member of the working group to draft the strategy and the only NGO to attend the workshop. This is a testimony to Saferworld’s expertise on SALW and long-term engagement with communities, civil society, the Kosovo Police, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Kosovo Assembly on SALW control.
