The problem of illicit civilian weapons possession in Kosovo is not new. Research indicates that rates of illegal weapons ownership already far exceeded the rate of registered weapons in 1989,5 and throughout the tumultuous 1990s, events in neighboring countries resulted in the influx of illegal arms across the borders and into Kosovo. The 1998–99 war further contributed to weapons proliferation and many of these arms continue to be held illegally in Kosovo today.

Community Safety in Kosovo |

Saferworld and the Forum for Civic Initiatives as part of joint SafePlace program hosted the conference on community safety in Pristina on 12 February 2009. The conference aimed to share community safety experiences and lessons learned with all the actors involved on community safety in Kosovo. Also, it aimed at linking community safety with national policy development processes through input into the upcoming school safety strategy. Download |

Saferworld and the Forum for Civic Initiatives (FIQ) hosted a conference on 20 November 2008 looking at the impact of small arms on human security in Kosovo. The event aimed to promote debate and co-operation between Kosovo officials, civil society and the international community on SALW related issues.
