The representative from Raushiq village requests action by the institutions on security in traffic
Prishtina, 16 December 2009 – at the meeting of the Steering Group for Police Actions Based on the Community, held at the Kosovo Police Directorate, Ismet Zekaj, director of elementary school “28 Nëntori” in Raushiq, Pejës, who is also the representative of this village, presented the experiences from his engagement in enhancing the safety conditions in the community, a project developed last year by FIQ and Saferworld, and he also shared his concerns of the community with the participants.

Mr. Zekaj presented the achievements in enhancing safety in Raushiq village and also presented his compliments on the cooperation of Community Police Unit of Peja with the Council.
However, Mr. Zekaj emphasized that the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) had not fulfilled its commitments in building an undercrossing and safety corridors for pedestrians. In 2008, the representative of MTC had promised residents of  Raushiq that this project would be included and fulfilled as a part of priorities for year 2009.
Mr. Zekaj said that Raushiq village is situated at the highway Pejë-Deçan and the crossroad Pejë-Deçan-Baran, adding that life of residents, especially students, is always endangered.
“It is sad to report that only during September this year, 5 pupils were hit in accidents, with serious body damages, one of them being still in life danger. After this happened, the community gathered to discuss this high level of insecurity. There were opinions that the school should be suspended, others thought that the road should be blocked and the asphalt should be damaged. In the conclusion, there was an agreement to put obstacles, bought by the villagers themselves. But, the biggest abnormality considered was that the traffic police made sent a letter for initiation a procedure on offense.  All Council members had to go to the Court because, according to them, we had blocked the traffic, whereas we were convinced that we were protecting our children’s lives”, said Mr. Zekaj.
On behalf of the community, Zekaj requested from the police to perform regular patrol and raise safety measures in the traffic. He also requested from the Ministry of Transport to fulfill its obligation and invest in building the undercrossing in order to save children’s lives.
FIQ and Saferworld have developed the project on community safety in the village of Raushiq, and continue to support this community in addressing safety problems, and their presentation before national institutions.
